Antique Tibetan Shakyamuni Healing Buddha. Gilt Bronze, 1800’s, Great Patina. This is a most handsome and venerable figure of the “Healing Buddha” or, more properly. Cast in bronze in Tibet in the 1800’s. The previous owner thought him, older, but I tend to be more conservative in dating. He is 7 inches Tall. His full title in Tibetan is. “The Radiant Lapis Lazuli Master of Healing Buddha”. He is revered in the Mahayana Buddhism of Tibet as the supreme dispenser of longevity, protection from disasters and the transmutation of negative states of mind, as all illnesses in Buddhism, by virtue of their karmic origin, are considered, to some extent, psychosomatic. Is typically depicted seated, wearing the robes of a Buddhist monk, holding a jar of medicine nectar in his left hand and the right hand resting on his right knee, holding the stem of the Aruna fruit or Myrobalan between thumb and forefinger. Our Buddha is seated holding a jar of healing nectar in his lap with both hands, without any plant stem. Southeast Asian artists are notable for the freedom with which they portray the various aspects of the Buddha. What is essential in a Healing Buddha is the jar of healing, the plant is often missing as in the following two examples. Kon-do: The Hall of Medicine Buddha in Toji Temple Standing Medicine Buddha in a private collection. Our Buddha is seated in. Or the full lotus position, an. Usually reserved for images of the Buddha after his enlightenment. Or flame atop his. Our Buddha holds the jar of amitra, the nectar of healing and longevity, with both hands. He has the three rings at his neck which mark him as a. An individual of great spiritual wisdom. And he also has a spiral. On his forehead, symbolic of a kind of third eye with which he is able to see past this world of suffering. Into the world of enlightenment. This spiral is repeated in the finial atop his coiffure. The two things I love most about this figure are the incredibly beautiful patina and the exquisite modeling of his face. The patina is of the best deep brown/black almost bordering on purple in some areas. But it is this Buddha’s face which sets him apart from others. He has the typical Tibetan sweetness with his gentle smile, but his arched eyebrows are unusually accentuated and his half opened eyes and gentle mouth are exquisitely modeled. There is a certain cheerful openness to his expression which seems to me to invite Communion with him. Our Buddha is 7 inches tall. There is no damage to the figure and the surface is completely stable with no powdering or flaking. The bottom is open and the tempered core of sand and clay has long since fallen away. The photos give an excellent idea of the beauty and finesse of this wonderful example of Sacred Tibetan Art. If you should have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. And thanks for looking. Due to limitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings, the color of the pictures on your monitor may be slightly different from the Buddha himself, but I did my best to capture him as he is. And, at least on my monitor, the color is a very good match. I try to do my very best in researching the items I sell, and include numerous photos.
