Welcome to my current listing of a beautiful and extremely rare Western Tibetan or Kashmir bronze figure of Padmapani (Avalokitesvara) dating to around the 13th century. The figure stands in an elegant tribhanga (contrapposto) posture holding the stem of a blossoming lotus flower with his left hand and offering the gesture of generosity (Varada Mudra) with his right hand. He wears princely jewellery and a tiered crown with triangular ribbons either side, typical of the Western Tibetan style. There are three crevices in his ear-rings and neck, where jewels would have originally been encrusted. There is also the remains of what looks to be gold on the stepped base on which the figure stands. It comes with a bespoke Chinese box with the words’Kwan Yin – Han Dynasty. See my other listings over the weeks ahead for more great pieces of Asian works of art.
